No. 33 Cobras Breeze Past Wolves for Sixth Consecutive Win

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The No. 33 nationally ranked Coker men's tennis team picked up its sixth consecutive win with a 9-0 victory over Newberry College on Tuesday (Apr. 1) in South Atlantic Conference action. The win moves Coker to 8-6 overall and 8-1 in conference play.

Coker had the brooms out early as they swept the doubles portion of play with scores of 8-3, 8-2 and 8-4, respectively. Andre Staab's 7-6, 3-6, 10-8 victory at No. 1 singles would be the Navy and Yellow's toughest win on the afternoon. Tom Sizeland notched a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles, while William Marrafao won at No. 3 singles with a score of 6-0, 6-4. Martin Moncayo continued his solid conference play with a 6-2, 6-3 win and Zach Grooms captured a 6-4, 6-3 win for the Cobras at No. 6 singles. The easiest win of the day would come at No. 4 singles as James Corfield found the win column when his match was retired.

With their wins, the trio of Sizeland, Staab and Moncayo each improved to 9-0 in SAC competition and have overall win streaks of 12, seven and six, respectively. The duo of Marrafao and Corfield also have six-match win streaks of their own and sport 8-1 and 7-2 conference records, respectively.

The Cobras will return to action on Saturday (Apr. 5) when they take on Shaw University in a non-conference tilt. The match is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start at the Coker tennis courts.
