Cobras Tame Wolves for Third Consecutive SAC Victory

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Coker College men's soccer team walked away with a 4-2 win in their South Atlantic Conference match Wednesday (Oct. 17) on the road at Newberry. With this win, the Cobras have won their last three matches in conference play.

The first half of action saw each team pepper the goal with shots but neither side was able to find the back of the net, heading into the half scoreless.

The second half would be a completely different story, Kyle Marcus opened up the scoring in the 49th minute after Riccardo Ricci's effort that could not be handled by the Newberry keeper. Marcus grabbed the rebounded shot and struck it in the goal for his first collegiate goal. The Coker lead would be short-lived though, as the Wolves netted an equalizer less than two minutes later. Jacob Simonis pulled the Cobras back in front with a 51st minute effort after a long throw-in from Attiyyah Shakir only for Newberry to drive it directly downfield following the kickoff and equalize yet again. Justin Watkins looked to have the shot covered in goal, but it took an unlucky deflection off of a Coker defender and there was nothing that Watkins could have done to save it.

In the 55th minute Coker would retake the lead for good as Shakir fired a strike from around 35 yards out for his first collegiate goal. Not even a minute later, Lucas Miquel Castrillo put the nail in the coffin by scoring the fourth goal of the game and giving the Cobras a two goal advantage.

In what proved to be an offensive showcase, the Cobras managed to take 20 shots, including 10 on target. Individually, Simonis had four shots and one goal, while Riccardo Ricci took three shots and recorded an assist. Marcus, Adam Garner, Steffen Husum, Matt Trimby, and Kasper Wallstroem all recorded two shots. Shakir, Castrillo, and Morgan Ratcliffe also chipped in with one shot. Watkins picked up his second consecutive win between the pipes, collecting two saves along the way.

The Cobras will be back in action on Saturday (Oct. 20) for a SAC showdown at Lincoln Memorial beginning at 3:30 p.m.
