HARTSVILLE, S.C.- The Coker College men's soccer team picked up their first South Atlantic Conference victory of the season on Saturday (Oct. 6) night 6-1 over the visiting Mars Hill Lions.
The opening half saw the Cobras jump out to an early lead after Robbie Jenkinson drew a foul inside the box, earning a penalty kick. On the ensuing penalty kick, the team-leading goalscorer Christian Provenzano stepped up and calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net. Mars Hill would pull one back late in the first half to send the game into halftime tied up at one.
After a back and forth first half, the second would turn out to be a complete domination by the navy and gold. Lucas Miquel Castrillo was the linchpin at the heart of the Coker attack, starting with an assist to Provenzano from a free kick just outside of the 18-yard box. Castrillo's second assist came from a corner when Matt Trimby rose above a host of defenders to head the ball past the diving keeper for his first goal of the season. Castrillo's third and final assist came in the 64th minute when he played a perfect through ball for Kasper Wallstroem, who was kept his composure and cooley fired a shot past the Mars Hill goalkeeper. Once again Castrillo would get in on the action, this time with a curled shot inside the box for his first goal in the Coker navy and Yellow. Jacob Simonis would slam the door shut with a goal of his own in the 85th minute.
Castrillo led the Cobra attack with a goal and three assists for five points, while Provenzano was right behind him following his two-goal, four point effort. Provenzano also fired off a total of seven shots, while Walstroem and Simonis took two shots. Trimby, Riccardo Ricci, and Steffen Husum all had one shot. Zach Watson tallied six saves in a solid effort in goal for the Cobras.
The Cobras will be back in action on Wednesday (Oct. 10) as they travel to Francis Marion for a non-conference match at 7 p.m.
