Last Second Goal Lifts Mars Hill Past Coker

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker men's soccer team narrowly lost to the Mars Hill Lions, 3-2, in double-overtime on Saturday (Oct. 11) night in a South Atlantic Conference match. This was Coker's third straight overtime match, and also its sixth of the season.

In the closing seconds of the second overtime period, Mars Lion slipped a shot past the Cobra goalkeeper to earn the 3-2 victory.

The Cobras were first to strike, thanks to a goal from Noah Gulley with an assist from Kaan Sen just nine minutes into the match. The Lions evened the score at one goal apiece in the 22nd minute. Then in the 41st minute Mars Hill struck again to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.

The score remained unchanged until the 72nd minute of action when Giouliano Andrade tied the game at two with some help from Connor Norton-Baker.

Neither team would be able to score the game-winner in regulation, sending the match into extra time, and after one period of overtime, the score still remained 2-2. It looked as if the match was going to end in a tie, but with just 15 seconds remaining the Lions scored the game-winner.

Coker outshot the Lions 28-8 and held a 6-5 advantage on corner kicks.

The Cobras will be back in action on Wednesday (Oct. 15) when they travel to USC Aiken for a 5 p.m. match.
