Cobras Fall to Railsplitters in PK Shootout

HARROGATE, TENN. – The Coker College men's soccer season came to an end on Tuesday (Nov. 5) afternoon with a 1-1 (4-2 PK shootout) loss to Lincoln Memorial University in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Food Lion SAC Soccer Tournament.

Lincoln Memorial took an early 1-0 lead with a goal by Mario Pinto in the 10th minute of action. The score remained unchanged for most of the first half, until Giouliano Andrade connected a long pass to Cory Johnson who fired a shot past the Railsplitter keeper to make it a 1-1 match in the 41st minute. 

After a scoreless second half the match was forced into overtime. Both teams fired off five shots during the 20 minutes of overtime play, but still the score remained deadlocked at one, forcing a penalty kick shootout. Stephen Scrivens got the Cobras off to a good start scoring the first goal of the shootout. LMU answered to make 1-1. A miss by Tony Quiroz put the Coker behind by a goal, but Noah Gulley stepped up and evened the score once again at 2-2. Another LMU goal gave the Railsplitters a 3-2 advantage. A miss by Brendan McCarron and another Railsplitter goal gave LMU the 4-2 advantage and the win.

As a team Coker fired 11 shots during the match and Kyndle Cobb made three saves in the net.

The Cobras finished the season with a 9-5-3 overall record, and 6-4-1 mark in the conference. They also finished the season ranked No. 10 in the Southeast region according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and Continental Tire poll.
