Cobras Use Potent Offensive Attack to Edge Bobcats

BANNER ELK, N.C. - The Coker College men's lacrosse used a potent offensive attack to edge the Lees-McRae College Bobcats 19-17 Monday (Apr. 17) afternoon in non-conference action. Garrett Kilgore led the Cobras offensively with a career best seven goals, tying the Coker single game goals record. In addition, the 19 goals Coker tallied is the second highest total scored in a game in program history.

During the first half of action, the Cobras and Bobcats played to an even 8-8 score. Garrett Kilgore scored his third goal and notched a hat trick by the 12:48 mark of the second quarter. Other Cobras scoring in the first half of play included Austin Holgate, Rylee Marsh, and Brooks Long.

Next, the Navy and Gold opened up the third quarter of action with an electrifying goal from long stick midfielder Austin Holgate. The goal was Holgate's second of the game. Coker used the momentum from Holgate's goal and went on to outscore Lees-McRae 7-3 in the third frame of play. 

Trailing 15-11 heading into the fourth quarter, the Bobcats started to claw their way back into the game with three consecutive goals to begin the final quarter. However, the Cobras slowed the momentum of the Bobcats by responding with back-to-back goals. Rylee Marsh and Garret Kilgore tallied the pivotal goal to give Coker a 17-14 lead. 

The game was far from over as Lees-McRae came within one goal of tying the game at 18-17 with 2:42 remaining. With the game on the line, the Cobras buckled down defensively and sealed the victory with a goal from Vinny Magro with four seconds remaining. 

As mentioned, Garrett Kilgore led the Navy and Gold offensively with seven goals and one assist. Rylee Marsh also tallied a hat trick for Coker with three goals and four assists, while Vinny Magro had an impressive outing notching two goals and dishing out four assists. Other Cobras who scored goals include Tim Wright, DeShaun Ormond, and Drew Thomson.

The Cobras will finish their regular season on Saturday (Apr. 22) when they host Lincoln Memorial for a South Atlantic Conference game on senior day. Opening face off is set for 4 p.m.
