Cobras Drop SAC Opener to Royals

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Coker men's lacrosse team dropped an 11-8 South Atlantic Conference contest to the Queens University of Charlotte Royals on Wednesday (Feb. 18).

The Cobras would trail the Royals 5-1 heading into halftime. A three-goal third period by both teams would send the score into the final 15 minutes at 8-4. Queens would score three unanswered goals to start the fourth, which would spark a four-goal run by the Navy and Yellow. However, the comeback would come too late as the Royals snuck out an 11-8 win.

Josh Wassum led the Cobra offense with three goals, while John Bretton netted two goals. Josh Smith found the back of the net once and dished out three helpers on the day. Shane Wilson and DeShaun Ormond each scored one goal, while Ryan Vento had one assist.

Defensively, John Elliott led the team with four ground balls and two caused turnovers, while Sean Buff picked up three ground balls and caused two turnovers. Tim Ryan played all 60 minutes and made nine saves between the pipes.

Coker will return home for a SAC tilt with the Lions of Mars Hill University on Saturday (Feb. 21). The game is slated for a 3 p.m. start.
