Cobras' Comeback Falls Short Against Lions

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker men's lacrosse team fell, 14-9, to the Lions of St. Leo in its season opener on Saturday (Feb. 14).

The Cobras would come out slow, but a three-goal second period would send them into halftime down 6-3. Heading into the fourth period down 12-4, Coker would score five unanswered goals to bring the score to 12-9. However, St. Leo would snuff out the comeback attempt and score two insurance goals to take a 14-9 victory back to Florida.

Shane Wilson led the way for Coker with three goals, while Mike Martiello added three points on two goals and an assist. Josh Wassum found the back of the net twice and Josh Smith netted one goal and handed out two assists. Ryan Vento added one goal, while Rylee Marsh dished out three helpers.

Dylan Marks headed the defense with five ground balls and two caused turnover, while goalie Tim Ryan made 13 saves on the day.

Coker will hit the road and travel to North Carolina for its South Atlantic Conference opener with the Queens University of Charlotte Royals on Wednesday (Feb. 18). The game is slated for a 7 p.m. start.
