Cobras Win Crucial SAC Game Against Indians

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker men's lacrosse team picked up a crucial South Atlantic Conference win Saturday (Apr. 5) defeating the Catawba College Indians 11-7. The win moves the Cobras to 4-2 in the SAC and into a three-way tie for third place in the conference standings.

In their final home game as Cobras, seniors Andy Campos and Ryan Maurer led Coker's offensive charge. Campos tallied three goals and an assist for four points, while Maurer found the back of the net twice and handed out two helpers for his four points. Shane Wilson also recorded four points on four goals. Timothy Smith and Mike Martiello each scored one goal apiece for the Navy and Yellow. Martiello also added two assists, while Ryan Vento and Mikey Mazzola each handed out an assist of their own.

In goal, Tim Ryan made 19 saves on 26 shots faced in 60 minutes of action. The duo of Dylan Marks and Patrick Timothee led Coker defensively with three caused turnovers apiece and six and two ground balls, respectively.

The first half was all Coker as the team took an 8-2 lead into halftime. The Cobras would come out slow in the third period and allow the Indians to net four goals while only scoring two of their own. As the fourth period started with the Navy and Yellow nursing a 10-6 lead, Ryan would shut the door on any comeback attempt by Catawba. The junior goalie only allowed one goal in the fourth and made seven of his game-high 19 saves in the final period. Coker would score one more goal late in the fourth to secure an 11-7 SAC victory.

The Cobras will be back in action next Saturday (Apr. 12) when they travel to Mars Hill University for a must-win South Atlantic Conference game against the Lions. The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
