Wilson Has Career Day in Coker's Non-Conference Loss to Belmont Abbey

BELMONT, N.C. – Sophomore Shane Wilson had a career day for the Coker men's lacrosse team in its 22-12 non-conference loss to Belmont Abbey College on Wednesday (Mar. 19). Wilson tallied a career-high seven points on six goals and one assist for the Navy and Yellow.

In addition to Wilson seven points, Mike Martiello netted two goals and handed out three assists for five points, while Andy Campos registered three points on two goals and an assist. Rounding out the offense for the Cobras was Ryan Maurer with a goal and two helpers and Timothy Smith with a goal and an assist.

Martiello and John Elliott led the Cobra defense with seven and four ground balls, respectively. Goalies Tim Ryan (9) and Anthony Malik (7) combined for 16 saves on 38 shots faced by the duo.

The scoring pace in the first half of the contest was relatively slow as the Crusaders took an 8-4 lead into halftime. The third period would be a shootout as the Cobras and Crusaders went back-and-forth with scores. Belmont Abbey would tally eight goals in the period, while Coker managed to net seven of its own to enter the fourth period down 16-11. However, the Cobras would go cold, scoring only one goal over the final 15 minutes and allowing six to give Belmont Abbey a 22-12 non-conference win.

The Navy and Yellow will conclude its three-game road trip on Saturday (Mar. 22) when they take on the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne University in a South Atlantic Conference matchup. The game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
