Martiello Scores Four in Cobras' Non-Conference Loss

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker men's lacrosse team fell to the No. 13 nationally ranked Dominican (CA) Penguins on Thursday (Mar. 13) in a non-conference matchup.

Leading the offense for the Cobras was Mike Martiello and Ryan Maurer. Martiello found the back of the net four times, while Maurer netted two goals. Rounding out the scoring for the Navy and Yellow were Shane Wilson, Timothy Smith and John Bretton, who all tallied one goal on the day. In addition to his goal, Bretton handed out a team-high three assists, while Andy Campos chipped in one.

Zack Price and Dylan Marks headed the defense picking up six and four grounds, respectively. With 11 saves on the afternoon, Tim Ryan registered his seventh consecutive double-digit saves game of the season.

After a tightly contested first period the Cobras would hit troubled waters in the second and fall behind 11-3 going into halftime.

The second half of the game would be physical and competitive like the first period and would see the Cobras and Penguins trade goals. Dominican's 8-0 second quarter run would prove to be the difference maker in the game. Coker would net six goals in the second half, while Dominican would score seven to capture a 18-9 victory.

The Cobras will hit the road this weekend for a South Atlantic Conference showdown on Saturday (Mar. 15) with the Pionners of Tusculum College. The game is slated for a 12 p.m.  start.
