Coker Defeats Shorter 15-9 in Season Opener

ROME, Ga. – Three players recorded hat tricks, leading the Cobra men's lacrosse team to a 15-9 season opening victory against Shorter University on Friday (Feb. 8) night.

In his first game as a Cobra, junior transfer Ryan Maurer led the attack scoring not only the first goal of the game, but four total. He added two assists and five ground balls. Sophomores John Bretton and Keith LaClair also recorded hat tricks. Bretton also picked up four ground balls and LaClair scooped up six.

Joshua Taylor added two goals and an assist, while Steve Marciano had a goal and an assist. Timothy Smith and Adam Zinsmeister each registered a goal to round out the Coker scoring.

Josh Masciarelli made 15 saves between the pipes, allowing just nine goals.

As a team the Cobras held a 51-33 shot advantage on Shorter. They also picked up 51 ground balls and scored five man-up goals.

Coker will return to the field on Saturday (Feb. 16) at Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C. The face-off is scheduled for 2p.m.
