Marquis Green Scores Season-High 20 Points as Cobras Shock Trojans

HARTSVILLE, S.C. -- The Coker College men's basketball team picked up a big South Atlantic Conference victory, defeating Anderson 83-72 on Saturday (Jan. 5).

Marquis Green led the way offensively for the Cobras, notching a season-high 20 points with four rebounds, and five assists. Khalil Halls added 20 points and nine rebounds, and Larry Cooper posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Coker jumped out to an early 9-4 lead after a Cooper steal, and a three-pointer from Green. The Trojans used a 9-0 run to take a 20-14 advantage over the Cobras midway through the first half. Chase Brewington knocked down a pair of three-pointers to keep the Cobras close, and an 8-2 run to end the half sent the Cobras to the locker room with a 36-30 advantage.

The second half belonged to Halls and Green, who scored 27 of their 40 points in the frame. Anderson used an early run to jump out a 50-45 lead, but the Cobras responded with a 14-4 run of their own, punctuated by another Green three-pointer.

The Cobras stretched their lead as high as 13 points at 77-64 with just over three minutes remaining, before the Trojans mounted a quick seven-point rally. Coker closed the game out thanks to solid free-throw shooting, hitting 14 of 18 from the line in the half, and 19 of 26 overall.

Coker's biggest advantage came on the boards, where they outrebounded Anderson 40-33. Their high-pressure perimeter defense also helped, holding the Trojans to just four of 20 on three-pointers.

The Cobras will be back on action on Wednesday (Jan. 9) when they travel to Salisbury, N.C. to face the Catawba Indians in a South Atlantic Conference matchup. Tipoff is set for 8:00 p.m.
