Coker Upsets Regionally Ranked Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Coker Cobra men's basketball team picked up a 90-74 South Atlantic Conference road victory over the regionally ranked No. 7 Newberry Wolves on Wednesday (Jan. 21) night.

Coker came out on fire in the first half hitting 56.3 percent from the floor and another 57.1 from three-point range. The Cobras used their impressive shooting to take a 45-39 lead into the break.

In the second half, the two teams would trade baskets until the Wolves trimmed the Coker lead to just three points with just under 14 minutes remaining in the matchup. That would be as close the Newberry would get, as the Cobras hot shooting continued and they stretched their lead to 20 with just under a minute left, firmly securing the victory.

The Navy and Yellow had four scorers in double figures led by the SAC's leading scorer Errick Bethel. He racked up 24 points to go along with five assists, while Trey Marshall tallied 17 points going 6-of-8 from the floor including 3-of-3 from beyond the arc. Trey James and Donte Samuels picked up a pair of double-doubles. Both pulled down 12 rebounds while James scored 16 points and Samuels scored 15 points. Aubery Daniel and Alex Cohen also chipped in nine and eight points, respectively to add to Coker's best scoring night of the season.

The Cobras will be back in action on Saturday (Jan. 24) as they travel to Tusculum to take on the Pioneers. Game is set to tip at 4 p.m.
