Bethel Scores 31 in Coker's Season Ending Loss to Anderson

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Errick Bethel scored a career-high 31 points in the Coker men's basketball team's 100-89 season ending loss to the Anderson Trojans in the semifinals of the 2014 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men's Basketball Championship on Saturday (Mar. 8).

It was a tightly contested, physical game from start to finish, as there were 19 lead changes and eight ties in the 40 minutes of action. There were also a combined 55 fouls, resulting in 63 total points for both the Cobras and the Trojans from the free throw line. 

Coker took the lead, 40-33, heading to the locker room at halftime. Anderson quickly responded with a 7-0 to tie the game at the start of the second half. The Cobras and the Trojans exchanged baskets over the next eight minutes, keeping the score within three points, until Anderson used a 9-1 run to take a 70-59 lead with just under nine minutes left in the game.

The Cobras continued to battle down the stretch, cutting the Trojan lead to just four points, 86-82, thanks to 15 straight points by Bethel, with three and a half minutes remaining. Unfortunately for Coker, a 14-5 Trojan run closed out the game at 100-89.

Bethel's career high 31 points included six three balls and a perfect 7-for-7 from the charity stripe. In addition to Bethel, the Cobras spread the wealth as three other Coker players scored in double figures. Julian Nelson finished the game with 16 points, five rebounds and three assists, while Eren Moses had a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds. Trey Marshall added in 10 points, three rebounds and five assists as well.

Nelson finishes his career as a Cobra with 1,418 total points. Good enough for fourth all-time at Coker.

 

The Cobras close out the season with a record of 15-13 overall, finishing seventh in the SAC standings with a record of 11-11 in league play.
