Field Hockey Falls to Slippery Rock on Sunday

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Coker University field hockey team dropped its non-conference contest at Slippery Rock on Sunday (Sept. 22) by a score of 3-0. 

The two teams played a scoreless first quarter, with Coker out-shooting The Rock 4-2 and putting all four shots on goal in the frame. 

The two teams played scoreless late into the second quarter, before Slippery Rock would break the scoreless tie with a goal in the final three minutes. Kayla Ulrich fired a shot off the pad of Kelsey Gibbons, which deflected right to Addy Ross. Ross was able to beat Gibbons low to the right side with a shot to open the scoring and put The Rock up 1-0. Slippery Rock would take its 1-0 lead to the half. 

Slippery Rock would score twice in the third quarter to take a 3-0 lead to the fourth. Abby McKay scored a turnaround backhand goal at the six-minute mark, before Emily Polakovsky scored from Ulrich with four minutes to play in the frame to put The Rock ahead by three. 

The Rock played stingy defense in the fourth quarter on its way to preserving the shutout. 

Coker finished with four shots on goal, with two coming from Amelia Gajewski and one each from Kelly Mason and Lisa Rempt. Gibbons (1-1) posted seven saves between the pipes in the loss. 

 Coker (3-3) returns to action at home on Wednesday (Sept. 25) when the Cobras host Queens (N.C.) in South Atlantic Conference action. The action is slated for a 5:00 p.m. start.
