Cobras Fall to Limestone in Conference Showdown

HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Coker College field hockey team fell to the visiting Limestone College Saints 4-2 in a SAC Carolinas showdown Sunday (Sept. 23) afternoon. Carla Deuble and Kaleigh Cordrey recorded both of Coker's goals in the contest.

Coker struck first in the contest, when the Cobras attacked the cage and earned a penalty stroke. Looking for the early lead, Deuble rose to the occasion and buried her shot in the back of the cage, giving the Navy and Gold a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute. However, the lead didn't last long as the Saints scored 57 seconds later, evening the match at one. Limestone went on to score one more time before the half, and took a 2-1 lead into the locker rooms.

After Limestone scored in the 49th minute, Coker began pushing the offensive tempo in order to get back into the game. The strategy worked, as Cordrey beat the goalkeeper for the score in the 58th minute. Kelly Mason earned the assist with a well-placed pass through the opposing defense. Trailing by just one score, the Cobras continued to apply pressure to the Limestone defense. However, the Saints took advantage of a penalty stroke and added a final goal in the 68th minute.

As mentioned, the Cobras were led offensively by Deuble and Cordrey with one goal apiece. Additionally, Cordrey led the Navy and Gold in shots, firing off two. In goal, Kelsey Gibbons collected nine saves off of 13 shots on goal.

The Cobras will be back in action on Saturday (Sept. 29) when they travel to Spartanburg High School to take on Converse College in a SAC Carolinas matchup. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
