MURFREESBORO, N.C. -- The Coker College baseball team opened their season with a doubleheader against Chowan on Saturday (Feb. 2).

The Cobras dropped the first game 4-1 before bouncing back to tie the Hawks 5-5 in the second game.

Game One

Hartsville native, Grant Thompson had an impressive season opener for the Cobras, collecting three hits in game one of the doubleheader. Casey Demko doubled in the Cobras lone run of the game in the fourth inning, scoring KJ Curry who reached base on a double of his own.

Michael DeVecchio pitched a complete game for the Cobras, finishing with nine strikeouts and allowing just two earned runs.

Game Two

Coker jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the fourth inning of the second game thanks to back-to-back-to-back walks with the bases loaded from Will Stallings, Harrison Morris, and Casey Demko. Grant Thompson then continued his big day with a single to left field, knocking in two more runs for the Cobras.

The Hawks came storming back in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at five runs apiece. The score remained tied heading into the top of the seventh when the Cobras managed to get two runners on base with just one out, but were unable to push the decisive run across the plate to break the tie.

Griffin Hollifield was outstanding in relief for the Cobras, striking out four, and not allowing a run in 3.2 innings.

The Cobras are back in action on Sunday (Feb. 3) when they square off against Chowan again in another doubleheader. Game times are set for 12:00 and 3:00 p.m.
