HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker College baseball team fell to the visiting Carson-Newman Eagles 7-1 on Sunday (March 4) afternoon. The loss dropped the Cobras to 9-7 overall.
Carson-Newman (12-6, 5-1) opened the scoring in the first inning putting four runs across in the opening frame.
The Eagles added two more runs in the second inning before Coker's (9-7) Tanner Wofford was called on in relief of starter Nick Taylor (1-3). Wofford took over in the third and eventually finished the game for the Cobras, pitching 7.0 innings, and allowed just one run the remainder of the way.
Coker scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of the third inning, when Reilly Hall singled to right field to score Matt Swiderski. Swiderski walked to lead off the inning, and then used his speed to advance to second base on a fly out to the centerfield wall by Jon Koski. Hall followed with the single to cut the Eagles' lead to 6-1.
KJ Curry made the most of his first collegiate start at second base, getting two hits in three at-bats and walking once. Brooks Estrada and Connor Cleary also added hits for the Cobras.
Coker will be back in action on Wednesday (Mar. 7) when they take on UNC Pembroke in a non-conference game at Tom J. Field at Dave Schmotzer Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
