HARSTVILLE, S.C. – The Coker College baseball team improved to 22-18 on the season and 12-12 in South Atlantic Conference play after a pair of wins on Saturday (Apr. 15) over the visiting Brevard College Tornados. The Cobras won game two of the three-game series by a score of 10-1, then took the series finale by a score of 6-0.
In game one on Saturday, a Thomas Lopez RBI double scored Darius Coldiron in the bottom of the first inning to give the Cobras an early 1-0 lead. Coker added four runs in the third inning, which started with Jon Koski scoring on a wild pitch. Three-straight base hits by Tanner Crosby, Bryson Conner and Brooks Estrada plated three more runs to give Coker a 5-0 lead. Brevard responded with a run in the fifth, however, the Cobras tacked on five runs in the seventh, thanks to a three-run home run by Lopez, a RBI single by Conner and a sacrifice fly by Clint Allen. Brevard would go down quietly in the eighth and ninth inning, leaving the Cobras with a 10-1 win in game one on Saturday.
Koski, Coldiron, Lopez, Crosby and Conner all had multi-hit games for the Cobras, with Lopez leading the way with four RBI. Conner also picked up a pair of RBI in the win.
Coldiron started the game, allowing just three hits in three innings. Brady Shuey came on in relief, allowing just one run on five hits in six innings. He improved to 4-1 on the season.
In game two, neither side was able to find the scoreboard through three and a half innings. The Navy and Gold struck first, when Tanner Crosby scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth inning to break the scoreless drought. The Cobras plated five more runs in the sixth inning, capped off by back-to-back extra-base hits by Robert Lybrand and Conner. Brevard had no response in the seventh, giving the Cobras the 6-0 win in the series finale.
Coldiron had the lone multi-hit game for the Cobras, with Lybrand plated three RBI in the win.
Will Sutton improved to 4-3 on the season, allowing just three hits in 4.1 shutout innings. In relief, Griffin Hollifield allowed just one hit in 2.2 innings.
The Cobras will be back in action on Saturday (Apr. 22) to travel to UNC Pembroke for a non-conference doubleheader.
