Cobras Hold off Blues, Pick up Midweek Win

HARTSVILLE, S.C.- Coker baseball (17-9, 4-2 SAC) defeated Bluefield State 12-9 in a non-conference matinee on Tuesday (Mar. 15).

After falling behind 1-0 in the top half of the first, the Cobras would answer with four consecutive multi-run innings, taking a commanding 10-1 lead to the sixth inning. The Cobra bullpen was able to hold off the furious rally over the next four innings when the Blues offense put up eight runs to cut into the home team's lead.

Overall the Cobras pounded out 12 hits, with five players recording multi-hit games. Darius Coldiron notched a 2-4 day with a double, RBI and a run scored, while Thomas Lopez went 2-3 with an RBI and one run scored. Miguel Frias was 2-4 on the day with a double, three RBI and one run scored, and Colton Henthorne went 2-3 with an RBI and a run scored. AJ Strnad capped off the offensive output at the bottom of the lineup going 3-3 and scoring twice. Strnad also stole three bases, as well as Bryson Conner, Lopez and Ryan Wayne each swiping one bag.

Will Sutton (2-1) logged the win in the contest. The southpaw fired two innings in his start, allowing one earned run on while striking out two. Dallas Baldwin would come on and fire one perfect inning of relief. Ryan Milner followed up with two scoreless innings of his own, allowing three hits and striking out one. Anthony Scaccia delivered a shutout inning, punching out two. Ben Brown, Kenny Barry and Jake Moore also made appearances in relief.

The Cobras will hit the diamond again on Friday (Mar. 18) when they welcome Tusculum for a three-game South Atlantic Conference series. First pitch on Friday is set for 3:00 p.m. at Tom J. New Field. Tickets for the game are $5 for adults, $3 for students and free to all Coker faculty, staff and students.
