Cobras Put it Together for Home Opener Win

HARTSVILLE, S.C.- A strong outing from Ryan Milner and a 14-hit effort offensively powered the Cobras past St. Andrews 11-3 in the baseball home opener on Tuesday (Feb. 2).

Milner (1-0) tossed 6.1 innings scattering five hits and two runs, one earned for the quality start. The right-handed junior also struck out five and only surrendered one walk.

Milner breezed through the first three innings but would face his only threat in the fourth. The righty allowed a leadoff single and followed it up hitting the next batter when he was ahead in the count. After a fielder's choice left runners at first and second, Milner issued a free pass to load the bases. After notching a huge strikeout to record the second out of the inning, Milner would need only one pitch to work out of the jam, forcing a harmless ground ball to the infield for the third out.

Milner would get plenty of help from the offense, who ate up a combination of six different Knights pitchers for 14 hits on the day. The navy and gold scored in six different innings, including three multi-run innings. The biggest blow would come in the four-run fourth. Darius Coldiron kick-started the inning with a one-out single down the left field line. Miguel Frias would score Coldiron from first when he smashed a double to deep center field. Ryan Wayne moved right along, lashing a single to left to score Frias from second. After a Michael Orlowski double, Clint Allen picked up an RBI making the second out of the inning. That turned the lineup card over for Will Winslow, who would reach on an error by the first basemen to score Orlowski unearned.

Six Cobras notched multi-hit games in the effort. Darius Coldiron shined in the contest, going 3-4 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored.

The Cobras will hit the field again on Saturday (Feb. 6) when they host Chowan for the first two of a three-game set. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
