Coker's Song Named to Capital One Academic All-District Team

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Coker College baseball player Sammy Song has been named to the 2014-15 Capital One Academic All-District baseball team. Song was selected to the first team in District 3 of Division II.

"Sammy receiving this recognition is a direct result of the hard work and dedication he has put in on the field and in the classroom," said head baseball coach Dave Schmotzer. "He has taken his studies seriously and it is very fitting that he is recognized as one of the best student-athletes academically in the district. I am honored to be his coach and extremely proud of him."

Song, a senior, sports a 3.8 grade-point average and will graduate later this month with a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology with a pre-dentistry concentration. On the field, Song was named to the All-SAC Honorable Mention team as an outfielder this season. He led the Cobras in batting with a .376 average, 13 doubles, a triple, and 23 RBIs. He also scored 30 runs and had six stolen bases. Defensively he recorded 87 putouts and had three assists in center field.

As a first-team selection, Song automatically advances to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first, second and third team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.

Originally from Port Orange, Fla., Song is the son of Chong and Byung Song.

The all-district teams are selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America and are intended to recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. Teams are broken down into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada.

Coker falls into District 3, which consists of Division II schools from the South Atlantic Conference, Peach Belt Conference and Conference Carolinas.
