Coker Drops Heartbreaker to Newberry in Extra Innings

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker Cobras lost a heartbreaking South Atlantic Conference game to the Newberry Wolves, 8-5 in 10 innings on Friday (April 11).

A tightly contested game from start to finish, the Wolves struck first with three runs in the top of the second. An RBI double by Shea Bell in the bottom half of the inning made it a 3-1 game. Newberry plated another run in the top of the third to take a 4-1 lead, but the Cobras made it a one run affair thanks to RBI singles from Jack Leech and Dustin Russell in the bottom of the inning. The Wolves regained the two-run advantage with a run in the fourth. A pitch hit RBI single by Coker's Brady Bassford cut the Newberry advantage to just one, 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth.

The score remained unchanged until the bottom of the ninth when the Cobras took advantage of a Newberry error and scored the game-tying run, sending the game to extra innings. The Wolves took control in the extra frame, as they plated three runs to take the 8-5 lead and the eventual win.

Andrew Goot (2-5) was tagged with the loss. He threw six and a third innings in relief allowing three runs on nine hits with five strikeouts.

Leech, Russell and Bell each collected two hits and drove in a run to lead the Cobras at the plate. Bassford drove in Coker's other run.

The Cobras and the Wolves will complete their three-game conference series on Saturday (April 12) with a double-header starting at noon.
