Catawba Takes Two from Coker

SALISBURY, N.C. – The Coker baseball team dropped its South Atlantic Conference double-header to Catawba on Saturday (Mar. 22). The Cobras lost the first game 12-8 and then fell in game two 7-3.

In the first game of the day the Cobras pounded out eight runs on 11 hits, but it was not enough as the Catawba Indians plated 12 runs on 16 hits.

Alex Hernandez (1-4) was tagged with the loss. He allowed nine runs on 11 hits with a strikeout in four innings of work.

Ernie Kirkwood had a pair of hits and drove in two runs to lead the Cobras at the plate, while Shea Bell was 1-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and a run scored. Chase Spivey, Fico Kondla and T.J. Giczkowski also drove in a run each.

In game two the Indians took an early 7-0 lead. Coker scored three runs late in the game, but they were unable to overcome the Catawba advantage.

Ben Brown (3-2) threw three innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits with a strikeout in the loss.

Giczkowski drove in two more runs, while Sammy Song had a pair of hits including double. Jack Leech also had a pair of hits and Tyler Bires drove in a run. 

The Cobras will return to the field on Tuesday (Mar. 25) for a non-conference double-header at Belmont Abbey. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
