Coker Completes Sweep of Mars Hill with 10-2 Victory

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Coker Cobras completed the three-game sweep of the Mars Hill Lions with a 10-2 win on Sunday (Feb. 23). The South Atlantic Conference victory improves the Cobras to 8-3 overall and 4-2 in the SAC.

The game began as a pitching dual, with just one run scored by Coker in the first four innings. The Cobras added another run in the fifth to take a 2-0 lead. Mars Hill made things interesting with a pair of runs in the top half of the sixth, but the game did not stay tied for long as Coker regained the lead, 3-2, thanks to an RBI single by Clint Allen in the bottom half of the inning.

Coker secured the sweep when they exploded for six runs on four hits in the bottom of the seventh. Another run in the eighth made it a 10-2 final.

Cobra starter Ben Brown (2-1) picked up the win. He tossed six and a third innings, allowing two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts. Forrest Arnold, Adam Webb and Hunter Ressler combined for 2.2 innings of scoreless relief work.

Jarren Donato paced the Cobra offensive going 3-for-5 with two RBIs, two runs scored and two stolen bases. Dustin Russell also drove in two runs on a double, while Fico Kondla and Ernie Kirkwood each had a pair of hits, scored two runs and drove in a run.  Also driving in a run for the Cobras was T.J. Giczkowski and Allen.

The Cobras will return to the diamond on Tuesday (Feb. 25) when they travel to Barton College for a non-conference game. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
