Cobras Split Twinbill with Chowan

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Sophomore third baseman Fico Kondla (Miami, Fla.) drove a line drive into right center field with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, bringing home Keith Wolf (O'Fallon, Ill.) to give the Coker baseball team a 5-4 win over Chowan on Sunday. The win came in the Cobras second game of the day; they lost the first game of the doubleheader 4-3 to the Hawks.

GAME ONE

In game one, the Cobras suffered their third one-run loss in as many games, dropping a 4-3 game to Chowan. The Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but Coker cut the deficit in half with a run in the second. The score remained 2-1 until Chowan added another two runs in the top of the fifth. Coker would again cut the lead to just one with two runs in the sixth, but that would be all the scoring the Cobras would manage.

Junior lefthander, Dan Meyer (Seaford, N.Y.) (0-1) took the loss. He allowed four runs on five hits in five innings of work.

For Chowan, Ryan Bradshaw (1-0) went the distance allowing three runs on eight hits with two strikeouts in seven innings.

Nathan Wilson (Milliken, Colo.) had a solo homerun, two RBIs and a run scored for the Cobras, while T.J. Sinnott (Denver, Pa.), Frank Suarez (Miami, Fla.) and Chad Nader (Rock Hill, S.C.) each had a pair of hits in the game.

GAME TWO

Game two started out with very little offensive action. Coker scored the first run of the game in the third inning on sac fly by Wolf. Chowan evened the score in the top of the fourth, but the Cobras answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning thanks to an RBI single by Rob Quattrock (Holtsville, N.Y.).

Chowan scored the tying run again in the top of the fifth, only to have Coker score two runs in the bottom of the inning off a two-run single by Wilson, giving the Cobras their largest lead of game at 4-2.

Almost on cue, the Hawks tied the game at four with two runs in the top of the sixth.  The Cobras were not about to give-up and after shutting down the Hawk offense in the top of the seventh, Wolf singled to lead off the inning and then stole consecutive bases to put the game-winning run just 90 feet way. Then with two outs, it was Kondla that came up big for the Cobras with a walk-off single to win the game, 5-4.

Kondla ended the game 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Wolf was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Wilson had a pair of RBIs and Quattrock drove in one.

Seth Rainey (Rock Hill, S.C.) (1-0) picked up the win in relief. He tossed two innings, allowing two runs on four hits with two strikeouts.

The Cobras will be back in action on Tuesday at home against the Paine College Lions. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
