Carpenter Appointed as Coker's FAR

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Coker College President Dr. Robert Wyatt has announced the appointment of Dr. Karen Carpenter as Coker’s Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR). Carpenter replaces Kaye Crook, professor emeritus of mathematics, who is retiring after five years of service in the FAR role.

“The faculty athletics representative serves a vital role in ensuring the academic integrity of our athletic program and the welfare of our student-athletes,” Wyatt said. “I am grateful to Kaye for filling that role so well for many years, and I’m certain that Karen will continue to build on the positive foundation that she has established.”

Carpenter, an Associate Professor of Education, joined the Coker faculty in 2011. She has served on several committees during her time at Coker, including serving as the Chair of the Wiggins School of Education Faculty Search Committee and Chair of the Academic Standards Committee.

“I am glad that Dr. Carpenter has accepted the role of FAR, as it is integral to the NCAA Division II mission,” said Vice President for Athletics and Athletic Facilities Dr. Lynn Griffin. “Her knowledge, experience and passion for Coker College, athletics and our student-athletes make her the ideal person to fulfill this role.”

"I appreciate the opportunity to take over this important position at Coker College,” Carpenter said. “I will do my best to meet the high standards established by Professor Crook in this job."

Carpenter received her bachelor’s degree in special education from Eastern Michigan University. She also holds a Master of Education in elementary education and a Doctor of Philosophy in Literacy Studies from the University of Nevada.

Her appointment as Coker’s FAR begins August 1, 2015.
