Coker to Induct Kaye Crook, Andrea Manuel Hennessy and Dr. Steve Terry into Athletic Hall of Fame

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Coker College will induct Kaye Crook, Andrea Manuel Hennessy and Dr. Steve Terry into the Coker College Athletics Hall of Fame in February 2016.

In a unanimous decision by the Coker Hall of Fame selection committee, Crook, professor emerita of mathematics and former Faculty Athletic Representative, and Terry, retired Coker Vice President, become the third and fourth faculty or staff members to be inducted into the hall of fame, while Hennessy becomes the second women’s volleyball player to be inducted.

The induction will take place during Coker’s 2016 homecoming weekend. A ceremony is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 6 in the DeLoach Center, with the presentation given by vice president of athletics and athletic facilities, Dr. Lynn Griffin and president, Dr. Robert Wyatt.

“We are very excited and honored to induct Kaye, Andrea and Steve into our hall of fame,” Griffin said. “All three have had a significant impact on Coker, and more specifically Coker athletics, and we look forward to everyone joining us to celebrate their induction into the hall of fame.”

Kaye Crook, a professor emerita of mathematics, joined the Coker faculty in 1982. An avid supporter of Coker athletics since day one on campus, she began her first term as Coker’s Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR) in 1990 serving until 2002.  She retired from the classroom in 2011 and was named professor emerita. She served in her second term as FAR from 2010 to 2015.

Crook was a very influential member of the Coker athletic staff as she helped the Cobras transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II in 1994-95. She also helped Coker make two conference transitions, from the Carolinas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference to Conference Carolinas in 1994-95 and from Conference Carolinas to the South Atlantic Conference in 2013-14.   She served on the Conference Carolinas Executive Committee and received the Meritorious Service Award in 1996.

In addition to her duties as a professor and FAR, Crook has held numerous posts on NCAA committees, including serving on the NCAA Division II Management Council and the NCAA Division II Membership Committee.  As a member of the first Management Council from 1997 to 2002, she helped create and establish the Division II governance structure and policies. She served two terms on the NCAA Division II Membership Committee, 1997 – 2002 and 2012- 2015, and was instrumental in developing and implementing the Division II provisional member education program.  She was also selected to attend the NCAA FAR Fellows Institute in 2010, where she was part of an elite group that helped refine the role of the FAR and develop tools and best practices related to the FAR position.

Crook holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of North Carolina – Greensboro and a Master of Arts from East Carolina University.

Andrea Manuel Hennessey had an outstanding career on the volleyball court for the Cobras. She was a four-year member of the women’s volleyball team from 2002-06, and was a four-time team captain and was named team MVP all four years. She was a two-time All-Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference (CVAC) performer in 2004 and 2005, and in 2005 she was a CVAC All-Tournament team selection.

Hennessey finished her collegiate career ranked No. 1 all-time at Coker in digs with 1,938 and in service aces with 233. She is also second all-time in kills with 1,513, fifth in blocks with 161 and she had a career hitting percentage of .205. Hennessey also holds the record for service aces in a season with 84 during the 2003-04 season. Also during the 2003-04 season, she finished the season ranked No. 17 in the nation in aces per set with 0.72 and No. 15 in the nation in digs per set with 5.02.

Off the court, Hennessey was equally amazing. She was a four-year member of the Coker Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), serving as the vice president for two years, she was an Ambassador, and she helped plan the Coker Make-A-Wish Foundation fundraising efforts. She received the James F. Byrnes High School Booster Club Scholarship and was a Belle McCall Scholarship recipient.

She received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Coker in 2006. Currently, she is the lead sales representative at Cliff Gaubert State Farm in Spartanburg, S.C.

Dr. Steve Terry has been a staple at Coker College and Coker athletics since he joined the staff as a professor in the Physical Education Department and the second head men’s basketball coach in school history in 1975. Since then he has held various titles and positions including head baseball coach (1975-76), Director of Athletics (1977-1990), Assistant Dean (1988-1990), Associate Professor (1988-2015), Vice President for Enrollment Management (1990-99), and Vice President for Student and Enrollment Services (1999-2014) and Vice President of Enrollment and Contract Services (2014-2015).

For more than 40 years, Terry has been a driving force behind the success of Coker whether as a coach, teacher, or administrator. He helped guide Coker athletics into the NAIA and eventually into the transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II. During his time as Director of Athletics and then as Vice President for Enrollment Management, the Cobra athletic teams grew from nine to 12, and eventually to the 22 intercollegiate athletic programs we have today.

In addition the growth in athletics during Terry’s time at Coker, there was unprecedented growth in all areas of the college including enrollment, where the College saw increases and record numbers in both the day and evening school enrollment. During this time, the College added six additional residential facilities to accommodate the student growth.  

In addition to his service to Coker, Terry has been a very active member of the community serving on the South Carolina College Personnel Association Board of External Relations, the Byerly Hospital Board of Trustees, the Hartsville YMCA Board of Directors, the Hartsville Chamber of Commerce Membership Committee, the Special Olympics Area III Board of Directors, and the Black Creek Wildlife District Committee. He also served as the Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center Board of Trustees, President and Vice President of the Hartsville Outdoor Club, and as a Deacon at the First Presbyterian Church of Hartsville.

In 2012, Terry received the South Carolina College Personnel Association’s Joe B. Nixon Award as the Chief Student Affairs Professional of the Year.

Terry holds a Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education from East Carolina University and a Master of Arts in Physical Education also from East Carolina. He received his Doctor of Education from the University of South Carolina in Higher Education Administration/Student Personnel Services. He also graduated from the University of South Carolina’s Executive Institute.
