During the summer of 2014, the Coker sports information office brings you the "Cobra Athletic Staff Spotlight". Each week we highlight different members of the Coker athletics staff, giving you an in depth look at the athletics staff and coaches. This week we take a look at Mary Buchner, Assistant to the Vice President for Athletics and Facilities and Dan Muns, Head Women's Soccer Coach.

Name:  Mary Buchner

Administration Position (Title): Assistant to the Vice President for Athletics & Facilities - aka “everything else”

Hometown:  Park Ridge, Illinois – northwest suburb of Chicago

Why did you choose Coker?  It’s close - I can walk to work!

What unique ability does your role give you?   After looking after coaches for so long, I could probably herd cats now. 

What is the best advice you have ever received?  Let go and let God.

What is the best thing about working at Coker?  The variety of characters I get to work with!

What achievement are you most proud of?  Still sane after daily exposure to the Schmotzer twins.

What is something people may not know about you? I know how to castrate sheep.

Who is your favorite professional sports team?    Having lived in Wisconsin for 15 years, I would have to say the Packers.  I like that they are basically owned by the town.

What is your favorite food?  Mashed potatoes with butter!

What kind of music do you listen to?  I don’t – I can’t hear it over the voices in my head.  But when I do, it’s everything from 12th century ballads to African a cappella!

What is the last book you read?  “Crossing the Threshold of Hope” by Pope John Paul II

What was your childhood ambition?  To grow up

What was your very first job?  I took in ironing for 25 cents an hour – this was before Permanent Press was invented!

What is your most prized possession? My six rescue dogs: Rumples, Hiccup, Monday, Menace, Sorry and Seager

Do you have a nickname? If so, how did you get it? Probably many but I don’t know what they are.

In your free time you like too… Read (so many books, so little time)

Why did you choose Coker?  The excitement and challenge of building a strong program in an environment of growth and excellence.

What unique ability does your role give you?  Being blessed to work with talented young people, I have the opportunity to help prepare them for life and also at the same time learn a great deal from them.

What is the best advice you have ever received?  Be fair…not equal and be a quiet professional

What is the best thing about working at Coker?  Awesome peers and a work environment that is competitive.

What achievement are you most proud of?  Serving our country in the US Army

What is something people may not know about you?  I am left handed

Who is your favorite professional sports team?  FC Barcelona

What is your favorite food?  Grilled steak and/or brownies…brownies should be made an illegal substance due to their addictive nature.

What kind of music do you listen to?  Green Day, Offspring, Led Zeppelin, Toby Keith, Chris Ledoux, Bob Marley, 300 Violin Orchestra, NWA, Beastie Boys, Public Enemy

What is the last book you read?  The Messiah Method

What was your childhood ambition?  Professional Football Player

What is your most prized possession?  My family

Do you have a nickname? If so, how did you get it?  That is classified information along with my middle name…the nickname came from my Uncle Ronnie.

In your free time you like too…  Wrestle with my son Harrison, take my daughter Hayden shopping, dance with my son Heath, spoil my grandson Bryson (and in turn drive my daughter Ashley bananas), go on dates with my wife (a lot), and go shooting by myself…if we still lived in California it would be all of the above, but at the desert and also riding off-road motorcycles
